Instructor Interest Application

  • (English) Genre Study: Franchises, Fandoms, and Fanfiction Genre implicates a reader’s expectations and assumptions about a particular work, e.g. Western, romance, science fiction, mystery, fantasy. Students will interrogate, question, and analyze how a particular work fits into, goes against, or spans notions of a particular genre. As a class, we will analyze how popular, cultural franchises (e.g. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, DC, etc.) both use and create their own subgenres, and how expectations within these help to create communities of fans outside of the stories themselves, including involvement with fandoms and fanfiction. In addition to class discussions and participation, by the end of the week, students will write their own flash fanfictions within a genre (and franchise) of their choice.
