Our Mission

To develop civic-minded students through an active and experiential education who create & critique culture, and who advocate for courses of action to address local, national and/or global issues.

Our Curriculum

Communication is a highly flexible degree program. Oral and written communication skills are among the top skills employers list when asked what they want in new employees, regardless of industry. Students in the communication program at Tusculum have presence and build their communities. They are prepared for job opportunities in a variety of fields, or for continued graduate study. Students can choose to take a standard program where they select electives within the field, or they can choose a concentration specific to their interests.

The communication program at Tusculum is designed for students. This communication program emphasizes applying classroom knowledge and scientific thinking to real-life challenges. The associate’s degree requirements are fully integrated within the communication bachelor’s degree program. The associate’s degree can also be completed independently. For students who have already completed an associate’s degree, Tusculum’s BA programs in Communication are designed to be completed in two years or less.

Students in Tusculum’s Adult and Online Studies attend class year-round, which is three semesters each academic year. This schedule helps them complete the program and earn their degree!

COMMUNICATION PROGRAM AND CONCENTRATIONS

Traditional

AA General Studies: Communication Concentration

The Communication concentration in our associate’s degree program focuses on developing a general base of knowledge and skills in communication. As a student in our associate’s degree communication concentration, you will learn to create effective informative or persuasive messages, and how messages affect our relationships, organizations, and society.

Students enrolled in an associate degree program will have the same benefits and eligibilities as those enrolled in Tusculum’s four-year programs, including access to athletics, student support services, tutoring, career services, and financial aid. All veteran’s benefits, including the Yellow Ribbon Program, may be used toward the associate degree. Credits earned as part of an associate degree program may also be applied toward completion of any four-year program.

In addition to federal financial aid options, the Hope Scholarship, Tennessee Promise funding, and Tennessee Reconnect grants may be used by qualifying students toward associate degree options offered by Tusculum, providing students with both an affordable and prestigious education. BA Communication

The general communication degree allows students to choose their own area of focus within the field of communication, or to take a broader variety of classes within the field. As a student in the general communication program, you will learn to create effective informative and persuasive messages – and how messages affect our relationships, organizations, and society. The general communication degree prepares students for careers including marketing, public relations, journalism, social media, event planning, brand management, and a variety of other careers. This concentration is also excellent choice for students wishing to continue their studies with a master’s or Ph.D.

BA Communication: Arts Outreach Administration Concentration

The Arts Outreach Administration concentration focuses on developing leaders in the visual and performing arts who can engage with diverse communities. As a student in the Arts Outreach Administration concentration you will learn to promote arts events to communities, manage nonprofit activities, secure grant funding, coordinate volunteers, and make the world a better place. The Arts Outreach Administration concentration prepares students for  a variety of arts administration careers in the for-profit and non-profit world.

BA Communication: Theatre Concentration

The Theatre concentration focuses on developing a well-rounded theatre professional, who has experience in performance, direction, writing, and technical production. As a student in the Theatre concentration, you will get practical experience in theatrical design, acting, stagecraft, and play analysis. Students at Tusculum University are encouraged to participate in theatrical productions as well as numerous other dramatic activities. Facilities include the 700-seat Annie Hogan Byrd Auditorium and the 200 seat David F. Behan theatre.
