Walter Wimberly completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Central Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in 1998. Upon graduation, he worked as a researcher specializing in real-time 3D modeling and simulation. He worked on various projects for the Department of Education, the U.S. Army, and NASA.

In 2003, he earned his Master of Science in Computer Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University.

In Florida, Walter taught at several colleges in eight years. He specialized in web development, databases and programming. He then moved into the industry field that he taught, gaining over a dozen years of software development and systems management experience developing applications used in enterprise-wide systems.

Walter moved to East Tennessee in 2015, where he lives with his wife and three kids. He has been teaching at Tusculum University since the fall of 2019. He teaches in the Math and Computer Science Department, focusing on computer science classes. He has started research into using AI and software engineering processes to speed up development of new applications.
