Dr. Denton’s undergraduate career was supported by the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program, and he engaged in research both in the Department of Psychology and in the Department of Philosophy at ETSU. Dr. Denton completed his MA (2019) and PhD (2021) from the University of South Carolina (UofSC) in Experimental Psychology with a concentration in Behavioral Neuroscience/Psychopharmacology, where he also completed the requirements for a graduate certificate in Applied Statistics.

Dr. Denton’s doctoral research examined the neuroanatomical and neurochemical effects of prolonged HIV-1 viral protein exposure in a rodent model of HIV-1. His graduate research was supported by the T-32 funded Behavioral Biomedical Interface Program and the Presidential Fellows program at UofSC. Following his PhD graduation, Dr. Denton accepted a T-32 funded Ruth L. Kirschstein postdoctoral fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in the Department of Neuroscience and the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine.

Dr. Denton’s postdoctoral research examined cellular and neuroanatomical adaptations following relapse to drugs of abuse in rodent models of self-administration. Dr. Denton has coauthored over a dozen peer-reviewed manuscripts spanning topics in psychology and neuroscience and is very passionate about student involvement in academic research. Dr. Denton’s current research interests lie principally in quantitative psychology and the mathematical/statistical modeling of psychological and biological data.

Outside of the office, Dr. Denton enjoys hiking, camping and generally exploring the mountains of east Tennessee.
