Dr. Smith, professor of psychology, joined the Tusculum faculty in 2012 after completing her postdoctoral work at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a graduate of the University of Kentucky where she received her PhD and MS in experimental psychology with a concentration in behavioral neuroscience and psychopharmacology. Dr. Smith currently teaches a variety of courses within the neuroscience concentration and general psychology curriculum. As a Behavioral Neuroscientist and Psychopharmacologist, she is an avid researcher who has primarily investigated the neurological impact of drugs of abuse and more recently health related behaviors. Furthermore, as a native East Tennessean, Dr. Smith is interested in health differences within the Appalachian Region.
Dr. Smith is an active supporter of student research, not only serving as a faculty mentor for students currently conducting research in the department, but also as a mentor for multiple Ledford Scholars and McNair fellows over the years. She has been published in numerous journals and regularly attends national conferences with student researchers. Dr. Smith supports the larger institution’s commitment to research through service on the Academic Symposium committee and the Institutional Review Board. Outside of the institution, Dr. Smith enjoys time with her family and serving her community. She is a proud Girl Scout leader for middle and high school girls and has led multiple scouts through their highest awards.
