We encourage faculty to explore the rich and varied opportunities offered within these agencies for developing the qualities of citizenship we seek in our students. This goal-oriented program works to keep elders active and functional. Activities are provided to improve physical strength and dexterity for each client while providing staff an opportunity to praise each client, improving their self-esteem. The goal of the program is to reduce premature institutional placement. Work with clients one-on-one or in group activities; provide parties, play games or do simple crafts.

Hospice is a comprehensive health care program that offers physical, emotional and spiritual support to terminally ill patients and their caregivers. Hospice care is provided to patients in their home or, when there is no available caregiver, in a nursing facility. The purpose is to provide the best quality of life possible for the patient. Provide companionship to terminally ill patients while regular caregivers have time off. This could involve reading, writing letters, light housekeeping or cooking tasks, etc.
**Twelve hour training program, Hepatitis and TB tests and three references required.

The Coalition includes service providers from eight counties in NE Tennessee. In Johnson City, these include Good Samaritan Ministries, Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), the Johnson City Downtown Clinic, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Veterans Administration Mountain Home offices, The Salvation Army, and the Johnson City Office of Community Development among other organizations. Types of service opportunities include data gathering (surveying); research projects; basic needs drives; food preparation and service; working with transitional housing; and IHN projects. Services to ARCH itself could include helping with Point-in-Time counts; developing promotional and fund-raising materials, etc.

BCPIA links a vision for social change with economic opportunity and sustainable community development. Based on priorities set by the community, BCPIA has an array of services and endeavors targeted at empowering families and revitalizing communities. Although first-hand experience on-site is very valuable, much work on projects can be done without leaving Greeneville.

This network of churches, local service agencies and volunteers responds to the need many families have to find housing. Between June 1999 and June 2000, there were 480 children between the ages of 0-17 who were homeless in Johnson City. Families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Perform office work or tutor children in this unique program for homeless families, or help with other special projects.

This facility can shelter up to 26 people, with separate floors for men and women. It is a family-type support base emphasizing God and individual responsibilities. Their mission is to help the homeless find shelter, food, and a permanent solution to their homelessness. Classes may help with upkeep on the house, conduct basic needs drives, special projects, or work in the thrift store. Revenue from the store helps support the shelter.

A ten bedroom, 14,000 sq. ft. house provides a temporary home for families with children in crisis. Greene County is the second highest user of the House in northeast Tennessee. Rooms are cleaned daily and meals prepared so the house is clean and inviting for the families. The yard is also quite large and is always in need of landscaping, weeding and cleaning.

Rural Resources is committed to connecting food, farms and families in Greene County and the surrounding area. Ongoing work includes educational projects designed to address specific needs and interests of local farmers, gardeners, and consumers of agricultural goods. Community-based programs are focused on sustainable agriculture education, development of new agriculture markets and land discussion initiatives that begin ongoing conversations about the land.

America’s Second Harvest is the United States’ largest domestic hunger relief organization, with a network of over 200 food banks and food-rescue programs. The regional Food Bank serves 250 agencies in Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties. Their vision is that no one goes hungry because they do not have access to food. Help in the warehouse, possibly labeling cans; conduct a food drive; secure donors for the “Second Helpings” program that salvages prepared food; help find locations for food pantries.
